YahOOOOO!!!!!!!

I loved flickr, and all the online tools, youtube, and a host of sites that will be useful for doing my own job. I got a lot of useful tools and information, some of which I have added to my blog and more which I intend to add at the first available moment. I am now aware of a lot more technology than I was a few months ago and can even communicate better with some teenagers when they use their jargon. The life long learning goal will be to continue making myself aware of these new technologies.

This has been a painstaking few weeks. Headaches, trying to learn how to navigate through hundreds of new sites and information. Remembering new passwords alone was a chore. I have enjoyed the experience but have found it to be difficult and very taxing while trying to maintain my own job at the same time. Teaching others helped the learning process. It would have been nice to be recognised with a prize, but I guess that wasn't to be. I have already used some of the information that I have learned and am sure that I will use lots more. Lots of fun and hard work at the same time.

I would recomend that the organisers suggest a more realistic time allocation for this project as it took a lot longer to do each task than originally suggested. Even those poeple doing the bare minimum couldn't finish in the alloted time.

My goal was to arrange information that I have found useful so that I can easily find it, I have started to do this but have a long way to go to include everything that I found useful. I must admit that I am surprised at the quantity of useful information and sites that I have accessed during this program.

Audio books

There seems to be an endless need for a variety of audio books in our library and their are certainly some interesting titles on these sites. I love that the audio files can be downloaded and that after the loan period expires, the audio file is deleted from the mp3player. These are great features, and a great collection. Love the childrens literature collections.

YouTube

I picked a music clip, "Everything I do,I do it for you" by Brian Adams because it was my wedding song and I love it, also because my favourite movie is Robin Hood which the video clip previews. Cool!!!

I was not fond of the Questionable material on the site, especially for children, but on the other hand where was a lot of interesting material that I would not have expected on the site. Such as conferences and old commercials.

It may be useful for libraries in communicating ideas and/or instructional information on their websites. Or it could be useful to post conferences that people are unable to attend so that interested parties could still have access to the conference video at a time that was more suitible to them.

Cataloguing policy presentation

Zoho Writer

Zoho writer was very easy to use to publish a post. Features that a I liked are the templates for a speech outline and a fact sheet. Very useful and easy to use. I aim to have more of a play with Zoho show and use it to prepare an online presentation that will demonstrate basic concepts and procedures of cataloguing.

My aim is to design a course that covers all of the basic concepts and procedures of cataloguing for staff new to our cataloguing department. Linking their training to our organisational practices.

Web tools

Biblio is a very useful site for locating a variety of books. Search for out-of-print books from independent booksellers and buy them.

Lulu looks very useful as a self publishing site with lots of useful publishing tools on it. Especially liked the look of the comic book creator. Could also be useful for family history publishing. Such a lot of people that come to our library are writing their own family histories and would find this tool particularly interesting. The training manuals would be useful for publishing documents for libraries, even perhaps for annual reports. The calanders and photo books would be great for christmas presents.

This was very easy to use. By far the most simple thing that I have been asked to do. These tools are all proving to have very useful applications. I am even locating resources and information that I am finding useful for my everyday tasks. Thank-you!

I liked the SJCPL subject guides reference desk. I will bookmark it for later reference as I find that resources that are useful on the reference desk are always appreciated. I can see that wikis would be very useful for a reference librarian in sharing information that has been requested, either as a current fad or for regularly asked questions and resources on family history.

I could also see it as a teaching tool for say a cataloguer to share information on tools, current practices and new policies. Perhaps an extension of a cataloguing meetings and training.

Web 2.0, Library 2.0

The task of a librarian is to be ever multiskilled and the tools that I am learning about are definately changing the way we locate and communicate information. We are shifting into a new world of librarianship where we not only need to keep ahead of where information is in traditional forms but all the varied ways technology and it's tools can help us to retrieve and send information. The fact that there is just so many of these tools and so many different ways to use them is just overwelming.

Technorati

It would seem that more accurate results are recieved by using tags rather than the thousands of results retrieved with key word searching in a blog. Useful for a cataloguer.

Technology

It is very useful to have so many images available to use in our everyday documentation and lives. It is wonderful to see the technology that is available in such applications as flickr, that help us share the wonderful images that make up our lives.
